This one’s for the Night People

night people

As always, we’re kicking things off with a free tune from myself. This time I’ve reworked Night People by the fabulous Etta James, from her 1980 album Changes. It's sped up with a crispy new drumbeat, some little breakdowns... and of course I've given it a bit of spruce up to bring out that lovely bass and let those sassy vocals shine. All yours for nada - enjoy!

Are you in need of some Funky Therapy?

I’m putting a night on! It’s something that I’ve been meaning to do for years, and I’ve finally taken the plunge. It’s in London on 19th October, and it’s in collaboration with The Discography Lessons, the label I help to run. We’ve lined up some of our favourite disco and house DJs and it’s going to be great, and all profits will be going to mental health good causes. Tickets are priced very reasonably, and we’d absolutely love to see you there. But even if you can’t make it, or don’t live in London, it would really help us if you could just click ‘interested’ on the listing page - it helps bump it up the listings page. Grab your ticket below!

Funkier Sounds and some other shows

shows

I’ve been a busy bee as usual on the mixes front - I actually did the guest mix on my own radio show a few weeks back, with a set of all my own stuff which was surprisingly fun. Then my most recent radio show was a tribute to Danielle Moore, with a replay of the mix she did for me just six months ago. I also did my LOOSE.fm show last month (just done September’s but it’s not out yet), and had lots of fun mixing up a fine selection of lesser known funk and soul, disco and global beats. Finally, I’ve done a mix for the amazing Spin City show on MyHouseRadio, which will be going out on Sunday evening. I’m thrilled to be back on this show - one of the main inspirations for me starting my own radio show!

Funkier picks & mixes

Here’s a few bits I’ve been listening to, that I think you should listen to too…!

First up I bring you this fantastic mix from last year’s Rio Carnival, from Tigerbalm - one of the best DJs out there, B2B Sonido Tupinamba. Upbeat, tropical and at times wonderfully bizarre, you won’t regret listening to this one...

Nathan Simpson’s monthly Soul Searching Sunday show on Unmade Radio is always worth a listen. It’s often pretty downtempo for the first half, but this one’s uptempo from the off - and full of disco, boogie and soulful house sounds…

Lastly, let’s bask in the glory of Crazy P once more, and celebrate the life of the amazing Danielle Moore. This mix is Crazy P to a T…

Gem of the Month

This month’s gem is Dear Limmertz by Azymuth from the album Oltubro in 1980. Less is more with this one - we start with a big slap bass lick that forms the foundation of the song. There’s some gentle vocoder work, skittery drums, wobbly synth hits and some trademark Azymuth jazzy niceness.

Thank you so much - keep the love strong! ❤️
