Gem of the Month
Tripping out for another free download
This month’s freebie comes from none other than Curtis Mayfield. Of course he’s got a load of great tunes, and one of those is Tripping Out, which is all soulful vocals and soaring strings - classic Mayfield. My version has ended up as a sort of broken beat thing - I’ve sped things up a notch (but not too much), let that lovely bass do its thing and made it a bit more friendly for the mellower mixed DJ set. As is customary, I’m not asking for anything for this, other than that you download, share and perhaps enjoy!
Funkier Sounds hits London - Last call for Funky Therapy!
Funkier Sounds’ first IRL event is just around the corner! On Saturday 19th October we’ll be teaming up with The Discography Lessons to take over the basement of The Castle in Whitechapel for a night of funky sounds, friendly faces and hopefully raising a few quid for charity. I foolishly booked it for ADE weekend, but if you’re in London and looking for a fun and cheap night out please do join us. Tickets are only a fiver, which ain’t half bad, and I’ll be handing out free high fives for all in attendance…
Funkier Sounds radio show October recap
It’s been a strong month for the Funkier Sounds radio show, with a couple of belting guest mixes. The first one was courtesy of Hot Gorilla Records head and in demand remixer Andy Buchan, who treated us to a slightly madcap journey through diverse sounds with a 90s twist. Then last week it was the turn of German maestro Phonk D, with a frankly wunderbar mix on the slightly more mellow side, cranking up just ein bisschen towards the end. Check ‘em out, and you can listen in to the next instalment live on NDC Radio, Monday at 9pm.
More lovely mixes for ya…
I’ve been spreading the Funky Word all over the shop too. Here are a few mixes I’ve got down recently - didn’t realise how busy I’ve been!
First up here’s one I did for a brilliant mix series called Discovery Cannelle, filled to the brim with mostly forgotten but always sparkling vintage disco gems. Jumped around the genres a bit less than usual here, but I’m really pleased with it!
I also did my monthly LOOSE.fm show, with a meander through the outer reaches of soul, boogie, hip hop, African sounds, and a healthy dose of vitamin disco
I was thrilled to kick off proceedings for a Disco Waltons special episode of Spin City to celebrate the show’s 7th birthday. I crammed 18 tracks into 40 minutes! 💪
Speaking of Disco Waltons, I hosted our Sunday Service show a couple of weeks back, with a mix from friend Pedro From Lisbon
And finally, my mix series turned 20 episodes old, and since I’ve decided to do every 10th episode myself it was my turn again… and I went off on a bit of a tangent!
Gem of the Month
Next up we’ve got a gem amongst gems - The Way We Live by Raw Soul Express from 1977. Starting with a simple guitar strum but soon launching into those magic horns, I’ve got all the love for this beautiful tune. It’s simple, timeless and fill me with joy.
Thanks as always - love to you! ❤️
