A freebie to make your heart sing

the real thing

This month’s freebie is my own version of a track I absolutely love. Most people know The Brothers Johnson for the classic and very good track Stomp!, but the true heads among us know that The Real Thing is where it’s really at. The original slaps plenty already with its dramatic strings and falsetto vocal, but I’ve beefed things up a couple of notches and added some breakdowns for dramatic effect. I’m so pleased with how this one has come out, and I’d love for you to download and enjoy. And yes, of course I kept the sax solo!

Funkier Sounds hits South America

funkier sounds

By complete coincidence, the last two episodes of Funkier Sounds have been a distinctly South American affair. A few weeks back we had a guest mix from one of my favourite producers of the moment, Bralan Arias from Bogota, Colombia. I’m a huge fan of his excellent jazzy house productions, and he treated us to no fewer than SEVEN of his unreleased productions. Pleased to report he’s keeping the standard high with his upcoming productions!

And then this Monday just gone I brought you a lovely mix from Alessandro Oliveira of Brazil. Alessandro runs his own radio show, and my mix for him has just dropped - see below. His mix was on a disco house tip, but the good stuff - refined, beefed up, respectful versions of well known tunes with a sprinkling of lesser known stuff. Highly recommended!

Fancy a Disco Dance?

In a pleasing quirk of good timing, the mix I’ve done for my latest guest’s show has just gone live! As mentioned above, Alessandro runs his own show, and we did that lovely guest mix swapsie thing. I kept things distinctly disco for my mix, keeping things for the most part pretty obscure, but dropping a few better known belters along the way. And then cranked things up towards disco house territory in the second half. It was a fun one to do, so stick it on if you fancy a little disco dance

Gem of the Month

Something with a bit of attitude for our latest Gem - Squeeze Me by Anita Baker, from that very best of years - 1983. Big growly bass is the order of the day here and we’re also gifted lashings of tight horn licks, crispy 80s drums and of course Anita’s powerful vocal. Brilliance!

Love yourself, love others, and hope to see you next time
