Lay down the boogie, download that funky music ‘til you die
The latest addition to my freebie edit series is one I've been meaning to do for a while - Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry. Standard Funkier treatment here - I've turned everything up to 11 as much as possible. Sped up, beefed up, new percussion, stems work, some light rearranging. It's turned out alright, and it can be yours if you desire by clicking the link below - time to lay down the boogie, and play that funky music ‘til you die!
I’ve joined LOOSE.fm!
The big news for me this month is that I've joined the ranks of LOOSE.fm as a resident DJ! LOOSE are an excellent independent radio station based in South London, and I often find myself tuning in for a dose of funky, left field, unexpected and/ or wonderful music. My new monthly show is called Definitions of Funk, and it's my attempt to showcase some of the many different flavours of music that I consider to be funky. I covered loads of ground in Episode 1, with funk and soul, rare groove, broken beat, afro, soulful house, boogie, hip hop, vintage disco and more. They're between studios at the moment so this one was done from home, but I hope to do it live in the studio soon. You can catch up on episode 1 via the link below. the show live from their new studio once they’re in. You can catch up on Definitions of Funk #1 below…
Funkier Sounds with Gamadon
Monday's episode of Funkier Sounds on NDC was a fun one! I pretty much just did a straight DJ mix this time instead of jumping around the BPMs the whole time like I so often do - worked my way up from a cool 110BPM to a frisky 128BPM to sneak in some joyous UK Garage towards the end. My guest this time was Gavin Macdonagh, otherwise known as Gamadon. Gavin didn’t hold back with his guest appearance, cramming a huge amount into a one hour mix. It’s a high powered affair, with disco, pumping disco house and jacked up funk, and it’s a whole lotta fun!
I’m only bloody playing Glastonbury!
…well pretty much. I’m DJing in the Arcadia crew bar - a lovely venue called the Tow & Hitch, on the Tuesday night before the festival. That’s right - I’m one of a relatively select bunch of performers playing before gates even open to the public… since I’m volunteering again I have the pleasure of being let in early, and what a joy it’ll be to play some funk and disco music to the good crew of the festival. Depending how my volunteering shifts turn out I may be cropping up elsewhere on site too, notably Sunday night could be interesting. Glastonbury is my favourite place in the world, and I’m beyond excited to get back there for my 12th visit. If you’re going, lucky you - maybe see you there!
Gem of the Month
Ooh, what a beauty this month’s gem is - Funky ‘Miyo’ Chan by Masaaki Hirao, from 1976. An immaculate slide of quirky and obscure Japanese funk, led my a ridiculously funky bassline and all sorts of talkbox silliness. I’ve no idea what’s going on, but I love it so.
That’s it for this time. Be good to each other, love yourself… and see you in July.
