Funkier Sounds April 2025

Welcome welcome, hope you’ve been well since our last encounter?
This month:
I’m giving you everything (well, a free download at least)
A mix I’m particularly pleased with - 2 hours of forgotten disco
Live now on LOOSE! (*depending when you’re reading this)
Gem of the Month

I’m giving you everything (well, a free download at least)

Everyone knows that Say You’ll Be There is the second best Spice Girls song (Who Do You Think You Are edits have been done a few times, and I’ve shelved my dark acid edit of that for now… but will finish it one day!). So anyway, here’s my version - done my usual stems thing to add some vocal solos and the like, beefed up the percussion and bass, got rid of some of the annoying bits and dialled up some other bits. Not much else to say except dig in, enjoy, and thank you.

A mix I’m particularly pleased with - 2 hours of forgotten disco

It was my turn to host the Disco Waltons Sunday Service on NDC on Sunday night. The guest mix was a no show and do you know what? I'm glad - it gave me a full two hours to do my thing, and I loved every second. I've been taking a lot of inspiration (and endless Shazams) from my favourite DJ Young Pulse, and this was a full two hours dedicated to what I've started calling Forgotten Disco - rare but impeccably good high energy disco and boogie from the 70s and 80s. It's music that's incredibly close to my heart, and after seeing Young Pulse bust out an incredible vinyl set of just this sort of thing recently I decided to have a go myself (albeit not on vinyl!). No fewer than 45 absolute stompers in this mix, and I bet you know less than half of them!

Live now on LOOSE! (depending when you’re reading this)

I'm privileged to have a monthly show on what is genuinely one of my favourite radio stations. The station is full of weirdos just like me - who love strange and wonderful music that's a bit off the beaten track. If you're reading this email when it's just gone out I'm literally on there right now - head to loose.fm to hear my choice selections live(ish - this one’s a pre-record). As usual I've started my show on a very soulful tip, building to some low-tempo boogie, a big slice of African vibes, a bigger than usual portion of outright weirdness and of course some of my beloved forgotten disco. And you can catch all of my previous LOOSE shows right here.

Gem of the Month
It felt only right to feature one of the forgotten disco tracks from my mix I was wanging on about earlier as this month's gem. The first time I heard this tune I had one of those lovely moments where I realised this was sampled in my favourite tune by Bristolian producer Julio Bashmore. But this song - People Get Up by Mass Production - is a hell of a stomper in its own right. After the little acapella it's straight in to uplifting vocals, horns, jangly guitar and mad wibbly synths. Definitely makes me want to get up!
That’s all for now folks, I’ll see you soon 💕
