Funkier Sounds 16th February 2024
Welcome! Thanks to each and every one of you who downloaded my edit of The Whispers last time, thanks to you it hit number 1 on Hypeddit! And anyone who’s new to this little newsletter, it’s great to see you.
This week...

Gem of the Week
I've launched a new thing… That's not all about me!
OK so what happened was that I put out a call for guest mixes for my radio show a while back, and the response was crazy ridiculous! There's a lot of DJs out there itching to show us what they've got, so I decided the only logical thing to do was set up a dedicated mix series.
So I've invented Funkier Sessions, and will be aiming to post a new mix from a different DJ about every week! All genres welcome, as long as the music's funky. I kicked off proceedings with episode 001, but I promise this isn't all about me… And episode 2 with Discobolous has just gone live. I'm looking for lots more funky mixes too, so hit me up if you want to do one!
A new tune from me
My release schedule slowed right down last year but I'm gradually picking things back up, and this little number is dropping on Sundries soon. Fittingly for Valentine's week, it's called Look Of Love in Your Eyes, and samples the wonderful Candi Staton, taking her into loopier, housier, almost jacking territory. It's on Traxsource as a preorder now and will be hitting all platforms next Friday! Hoping you like this one, and plenty more releases to come from me later this year.
Funkier Sounds with Mr Feel Good
I went in at a high tempo for this episode, slowed things right down then built it back up - all in the course of 40 minutes. It was a shorter set for me this time, because my guest mix was an hour and 20. Doing the honours this time was Chris Allen AKA Mr Feel Good. His mix is bloody brilliant - a wide ranging trip with influences of disco, house, funk, hip hop, pop, jacking and a whole lot more. Wonderful stuff!
Some free music for you
This time I’m sharing a free tune that has made its way into my collection over the last week. It’s called Aeo Aeo, it’s by Classonix and is a free download on Sundries (the same label I’m releasing a tune on and talked about above). I guess this one can be described as deep disco with international influences, and I think it’s got a bit of an old skool vibe too. Lots going on in this slightly zany track, but it’s pulled together really nicely. It’s the sort of tune that wouldn’t be out of place at Low Life, my favourite party (which is happening this weekend!🙌). Anyway, please grab it for free and support this great label!
Gem of the Week
Another one I discovered via a sample of it in a dance track a few years back, this one’s pure joy. It’s Rock Don’t Stop by Taxie, which I think was recorded at some point in the late 70s but has been rereleased in the last few years. Starting with a simple crackly kick and building into a flute powered disco gem, this is just the sort of forgotten nugget of goodness that I love to discover. It’s got cowbell too!
Let’s keep those Valentine’s vibes flowing year round - keep on loving!
